Industries Leaders Call For Next Gen Talent At 8th Explore Aviation Careers Conference

CHUKS OKOH

The future of aviation will be shaped not only by advanced aircraft or cutting-edge technology, but by the quality, competence, and character of the people who drive the industry forward. This declaration formed the bedrock of the 8th Explore Aviation Careers Conference 2026, where key stakeholders and aspiring professionals gathered to address the rapidly evolving demands of the global aviation sector.

Welcoming attendees, conference convener Tolulope Daudu emphasized the urgent imperative to inspire, educate, mentor, and prepare the next generation of aviation professionals. Centered on the theme “Navigating the Future: Building Careers in a Dynamic Industry,” the conference highlighted how ongoing technological advancements, changing global standards, and heightened demands for safety, innovation, and professionalism are continuously reshaping career pathways across the skyways.

Daudu noted that the initiative serves as far more than a routine gathering, describing it as a vital platform for knowledge sharing, mentorship, strategic networking, and career discovery.

The overarching vision remains focused on bridging the gap between youth aspiration and real-world opportunity, ensuring young people understand the discipline, preparation, and commitment required to excel in the industry.

Expressing deep gratitude to partners, speakers, and supporters, Daudu commended their collective effort in building a skilled and future-ready workforce. Participants were encouraged to actively engage with distinguished speakers, seek guidance, and forge meaningful connections. The event concluded with an inspiring call to action for stakeholders to unite in opening doors of opportunity and securing a stronger aviation workforce for tomorrow.

Air Commodore Ademola Onituju, President of the Aviation Roundtable (ART), in his presentation, emphasized the critical need for a solid educational foundation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for anyone seeking a thriving career in the aviation industry.

Speaking on the multifaceted nature of the aviation sector, Onituju noted that while the industry accommodates diverse professions, a background in science and logical reasoning remains vital for success.

Onitiju stressed that basic computer literacy and an understanding of computerized systems are essential, as modern aviation relies heavily on digital navigation, automated flight decks, and ground operations.

Highlighting the interconnectedness of aviation roles, the ART President explained that an aircraft comprises over a thousand components that must work harmoniously to ensure safe flight. Consequently, every professional within the ecosystem, from pilots and cabin crew to data analysts, engineers, and ground handlers, plays an indispensable role in maintaining safety standards.

Onituju also highlighted key training institutions in Nigeria, such as the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria and the African Aviation University, as pivotal centers for grooming industry professionals. He concluded by reminding aspiring aviation professionals that the sector is heavily regulated, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols, continuous professional development, and unwavering dedication to excellence.

Delivering a compelling presentation on careers in aviation, Engr. Abatan shared his remarkable life story with aspiring professionals, detailing how a young boy’s dream in Mayflower School evolved into a trailblazing career spanning aircraft maintenance, avionics, and flight piloting. Growing up under the tutelage of the late educationalist Dr. Tai Solarin, Abatan imbibed a culture of hard work and integrity that would define his professional journey. Despite initial resistance from his mentor regarding a military flying career, Abatan pursued his passion relentlessly, navigating through the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, the US Embassy educational channels, and rigorous professional training abroad to establish Airfirst, a testament to the power of vision and unwavering faith.

From his early days of absorbing wisdom at Mayflower School to cutting his teeth in avionics and airframe power plants, Abatan emphasized that a career in aviation demands total dedication.

He enlightened prospective engineers and pilots about the distinct roles within the sector, explaining that aeronautical engineers focus on aircraft design much like architects, while aircraft maintenance engineers serve as the hands-on mechanics who turn blueprints into flying realities. Reflecting on his own hurdles, including registering his company in 2007 without initial capital and building a premier hangar through sheer grit.

He urged young minds to conquer fear, noting that fear is the only true obstacle that can halt one’s ambitions. Today, as the head of Airfirst, Engr. Abatan stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that with unwavering faith, relentless hard work, and a profound love for the skies, anyone can achieve their ultimate aviation dream.
