The Member representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Marcus I. Onobun (KSC), has expressed deep concern and sadness over the deteriorating security situation in Ekpoma, and its environs.
In a statement released today by his media office, the Federal Lawmaker extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have tragically lost their lives in captivity and expressed profound sympathy for the victims of the recent wave of kidnappings.
The member described the current trend as alien to the history of Ekpoma, a peaceful university community that has long been a hub of learning and commerce. He decried the invasion of the community’s forests by criminal elements who have turned innocent citizens into prey.
“I wish to assure our people that we are not sleeping on this matter. We are extremely concerned about these sad developments and are actively collaborating with the State Government and relevant security agencies to deal decisively with this issue,” he stated.
He maintained that the government remains superior to criminal entities, asserting: “Non-state actors cannot and will not overwhelm our government, state security, or national security architecture. We will not surrender our home to fear.”
The lawmaker charged the people of Esan West to remain strong, brave, and vigilant. He emphasized that collective resilience is required to defeat the enemies of the community.
Furthermore, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community heads to intensify efforts in enlightening the public on basic security awareness. He urged them to lead the charge in intelligence gathering so that vital information can be promptly relayed to security agencies for swift action.
The lawmaker commended the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his proactive response, immediate attention, and commitment to stamping out this menace and restoring peace to the state.
He also commended the Council chairman for his proactive steps at imposing a dusk to dawn restriction on Motorcycle and Keke movement in Esan West .
