The Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu, will in December receive direct cargo flights from Guangzhou, China, The minister of aviation and aerospace development, Mr Festus Keyamo has disclosed.
Keyamo said the move aimed at boosting trade and transforming the Akanu Ibiam International Airport into a major cargo hub for the South-East.
Keyamo made this known in Lagos at the unveiling of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, facilitated by the Federal Government for one of the domestic airline operators.
According to him, discussions with the Enugu State Government and relevant partners are at an advanced stage to ensure the service begins before the end of the year.
He said the Tinubu administration has deliberately focused on strengthening indigenous airlines rather than establishing a national carrier, insisting that government policies are designed to help local operators expand and compete on international routes.
According to him, the ministry inherited numerous disputes involving airlines and aviation unions but adopted a collaborative approach that has restored confidence in the industry and encouraged financial institutions to support airline operations.
He noted that the improved investment climate and Nigeria’s compliance with international agreements are helping domestic airlines secure additional aircraft after extensive negotiations with manufacturers and financiers.
The minister revealed that government has approved the establishment of a Nigerian aircraft leasing company to provide guarantees and ease access to aircraft for domestic carriers.
He added that United Nigeria Airlines is being considered for international routes, including New York, Canada and Dubai, as the government seeks to ensure Nigerian airlines capture a larger share of the country’s growing international passenger market.
Mr. Keyamo also said efforts are ongoing to develop Lagos into a regional transit hub and expand airport infrastructure across the country, including projects in Abia and Enugu States.
Appealing for public support, the minister assured passengers that government remains committed to improving service delivery, reducing flight disruptions and working closely with airlines to enhance operational efficiency.
Also speaking at the event, the governor of Abia state, Mr. Alex Otti commended the Federal government for its support in the ongoing construction of the airport in the state.
According to him the runway construction had reached an advanced stage and looked forward to its completion with the counterpart funding from the federal government.
The Director General, Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo gave the assurance that it would continue to ensure the ease of doing business for the operators, adding that, it regulatory oversight should never be downplayed.
Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, a beneficiary of the two aircraft applauded the present administration for supporting local airlines to thrive with access to aircraft, putting policies in place and signing agreements with aircraft manufacturers to enhance their Operations.
