CHUKS OKOH,
Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) has reinforced its commitment to inclusive passenger management with the acquisition and deployment of a high-capacity AmbuLift. The move makes SAHCO the sole ground handling company in Nigeria to own and operate this specialized equipment.
Designed to enhance passenger safety and accessibility, the AmbuLift enables safe, dignified, and efficient embarkation and disembarkation for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM), including wheelchair users and passengers requiring stretcher support. Utilizing a hydraulic lifting system, the equipment raises an enclosed cabin to aircraft-door level, facilitating seamless transfers—particularly at remote stands where boarding bridges are unavailable.
The addition complements SAHCO’s earlier investment in Evac-Chairs, which assist PRM passengers on steps, further cementing the company’s focus on international accessibility standards. International carrier British Airways provided operational guidance throughout the procurement process to align deployment procedures with global airline expectations.
Commenting on the deployment, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi (CON), Chairman of SAHCO, emphasized the operational value of the new asset:
“Owning and operating the AmbuLift means we can respond directly to the needs of passengers with reduced mobility rather than improvising. It gives our teams the right tool to do this sensitive work properly and gives passengers and their families confidence that they will be handled with care from the apron to the aircraft door.”
SAHCO Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, added that the acquisition aligns with the company’s broader operational philosophy:
“The AmbuLift is a significant addition to our operations and demonstrates our commitment to providing safe, dignified and professional services to every passenger, particularly those requiring additional assistance. Our investment in both the AmbuLift and Evac-Chairs reflects our deliberate approach to strengthening our PRM handling capabilities.”
To ensure compliance with global standards, project advisory, testing, commissioning, and functional certification were coordinated by UK-based Expavia Aviation Consultants. European GSE specialist Ergon Training Center conducted theoretical and practical training sessions, alongside technical inspections at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos. Following the training, designated SAHCO operators earned certification under IATA AHM 1110 RMP 14m standards.
The AmbuLift expands SAHCO’s suite of aviation support services, which encompasses passenger, baggage, ramp, cargo handling, aviation security, and premium lounge operations across Nigerian airports.
