Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden, Her Excellency Mrs. Lola Akande, has formally received and honoured young Nigerian innovator Mr. Chiedu Richards and the Nigerian delegation in Stockholm following their impressive outing at the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) International Final.
Mr. Richards, a student of Prime Seed of Abraham High School in Ibusa, Delta State, represented Nigeria as its National Finalist after co-developing an groundbreaking eco-friendly water treatment system. His project, titled “Self-healing Intelligent Biofilter Water Purification System,” focuses on isolating beneficial bacteria from fermented oil bean (ugba) to create a biological film capable of extracting heavy metals and toxic organic pollutants from contaminated water while naturally regenerating itself over time.
Receiving the delegation at the Embassy of Nigeria in Stockholm, Ambassador Akande commended Mr. Richards and his team for demonstrating exceptional scientific ingenuity, environmental consciousness, and dedication on the global stage. She noted that although Nigeria did not clinch the top overall prize, the international recognition accorded to the biofilter initiative highlights the immense potential of Nigerian youth in driving practical solutions to worldwide challenges.
During the reception, Ambassador Akande presented Mr. Richards with an official Letter of Commendation alongside a commemorative gift in recognition of his distinguished representation of the nation. She further praised the management of Prime Seed of Abraham High School, his teachers, parents, and supporting institutions whose guidance enabled the student’s success at the global competition.
Her Excellency emphasized the vital need to bridge youth research with practical industry development, calling on Nigerian universities, research institutes, government bodies, and private sector leaders to collaborate on funding, testing, and scaling such locally developed technologies.
The Ambassador added that supporting young minds in science and innovation directly aligns with national priorities to expand clean water access under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, while reaffirming the Embassy’s commitment to advancing Nigeria–Sweden diplomatic relations through youth development, research, and sustainability initiatives.
